It's an English thing.
Guy Fawkes Night is another name for it.
It brings back memories of our firecracker night which was held on the June long weekend, which, from the definition above, had the same meaning.
I never knew that. But then, I was only about 13 when it got banned in Australia.

When I was living in the UK I went to a great fireworks night on Guy Fawkes, with a huge bonfire at Battersea Park (I think, a few years ago now).
It was gold but great.
